Outsiders: Kanal w/ Diedrich Diederichsen

Compiled by German writer, cultural critic, and music theorist Diedrich Diederichsen, this selection explores the history of unconventional female voices in pop music. Recording made it possible to turn non standard voices into objects of desire—but, at first, mainly for men. While rough, nasal, untrained male voices were celebrated, women were still expected to sing with technical mastery. This selection brings together women who, already in the 1960s, challenged these conventions through rawness, intensity, noise, and passion. Fifty years later, rejecting classical vocal stereotypes has become almost mainstream. This playlist pays tribute to these pioneers of the rough voice.
